John Giannini is a veteran photojournalist, video journalist and filmmaker with more than four decades of experience. He began his career as a U.S. Army combat photographer and served two tours in Vietnam. He has covered major stories all over the world for major news magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, Time, Life, Newsweek, and international photo agencies. He was the first staff photographer based in Beijing for Agence France-Presse, covering major events in China from 1987 - 1989. He then settled in Hong Kong, where he covered the 1997 handover of sovereignty from Britain to China and roamed South East & South Asia. Born and raised in Chicago, he has lived in some of the world’s major cities - New York, London, Paris, Beijing, San Francisco - and traveled some of the world’s most dangerous backroads - Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Afghanistan, Nicaragua - to name a few. He produced Taking the Beach for ABC News NIGHTLINE to mark the 60th anniversary of the D-Days landings. He worked as still photographer on Errol Morris’s first documentary The Gates of Heaven. Over the years he has worked with director George Csicsery on several of his films including Where the Heart Roams, N is number, Julia Robinson and Hilbert’s Tenth Problem, and Taking the Long View: The Life of Shing Shen Chern. He is currently Director of Photography on License to Tell, Csicsery’s documentary film in progress. In 1983 he began producing and directing the documentary FINALLY A VOICE: The Birth of the Vietnam Veterans of America, which was originally entitled Passage to Power. The film was completed in July, 2015. In 1986, based on a rough sample of Passage to Power, he was named Artist of the Year for Filmmaking by the Marin Arts Council,. He was president of The Foreign Correspondents’ Club, Hong Kong from 1996 - 1997 and is also a member of The Frontline Club in London. After many years of living abroad, he returned to the United States in 2004 and now lives in Southern California.
